In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and...

Hydrographic conditions in the Brazil‐Malvinas Confluence during austral summer 1990 ArchiMer
Provost, Christine; Gana, S; Garcon, V; Maamaatuaiahutapu, K; England, Mh.
The Confluence 3 cruise during February 1990 provides the first hydrographic survey of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence region ever obtained with such a refined spatial resolution over the continental slope. The closely spaced stations on the slope permit the observation of the branching of the Malvinas Current near 40 degrees S. The eastern branch returns south, while the eastern one is squeezed along the continental slope, managing to continue northward as far north as 36.3 degrees S. The Brazil-Malvinas (B-M) front has a north-south orientation on the slope and an east-west direction offshore. The B-M front is marked by very strong gradients in temperature and salinity. Fine scale vertical structures and intrusions are numerous in the vicinity of the...

Malvinas Current Volume Transport at 41 degrees S: A 24 Yearlong Time Series Consistent With Mooring Data From 3 Decades and Satellite Altimetry ArchiMer
Artana, Camila; Ferrari, Ramiro; Koenig, Zoe; Sennechael, Nathalie; Saraceno, Martin; Piola, Alberto R.; Provost, Christine.
We combined altimetric data and the in situ data sets from three 10 years apart mooring deployments to compute a coherent and accurate volume transport time series of the Malvinas Current (MC) at 41 degrees S. We used a method developed in Koenig et al. (2014) and explored three types of geostrophic shear to estimate the uncertainty derived from the lack of velocity data in the upper 300 m. The mean MC transport over 24 years in the upper 1,500 m is 37.12.6 Sv and the standard deviation 6.61 Sv. Since 1993, annual mean transports have varied from 32 to 41 Sv and the three in situ records corresponded to low annual mean transports. The MC transport time series is not stationary, its spectral content evolves with time showing significant energy at the 30-110...

Transports of the Brazil and Malvinas currents at their confluence ArchiMer
Maamaatuaiahutapu, Keitapu; Garcon, Véronique; Provost, Christine; Mercier, Herle.
Geostrophic transports of the western boundary currents at the Brazil/Malvinas Confluence in the South Atlantic Ocean are estimated from the data set of the Confluence 3 cruise (February 1990) with a nonlinear inverse model which takes into consideration density, current meter and wind data, and dynamical (planetary vorticity, Ekman, mass conservation) constraints. Inversions are carried out with two initial different levels of no motion at 1500 m (Case A) and at 3000 m (Case B). Consistencies of the water volume transports provided by both inversions are analyzed and compared to previous estimates. Current meter constraints are applied in the Malvinas Current region where a total transport of 45 +/- 7 Sv (1 Sv = 10(6) m(3) s(-1)) is given by both...

Variations in the Malvinas Current volume transport since October 1992 ArchiMer
Spadone, Aurelie; Provost, Christine.
We present a set of new current meter measurements collected to monitor the Malvinas Current ( MC) near its merger with the Brazil Current at 40-41 degrees S from December 2001 to February 2003 below a Jason-1 altimeter track. These measurements are compared to former measurements obtained 8 years earlier at the same location; they also provide new information on the core of the MC on the continental slope above the 1000-m isobath where a mooring had been previously lost. There, most of the velocity variation is along-isobath (80% of the variance) and shows a significant annual cycle. The two data sets provide coherent means and statistical parameters on the vertical structure of the flow. A 14-year-long time series of MC volume transport is derived using...
